Now that the new year is upon us, it’s time to start thinking about license renewals and CEU’s. If you’re like me and your license is up for renewal in April, you’re thinking about where you put that attendance certificate from that conference you attended last year. Or maybe you’re a procrastinator and will be waiting until the last minute to get your CEU’s completed.

Do you know what the Continuing Education requirements are? I’ve provided a brief overview below and you can also find them here at Florida DOH website.

RN’s and LPN’s

Every renewal period (every 2 years), RN’s and LPN’s are required to complete 24 hours of CE which should include 2 hours of Prevention of Medical Errors.
Every 3rd renewal (every 6 years), RN’s and LPN’s are required to complete an additional 2 hours of Domestic Violence, for a total of 26 CEU’s.

CNA’s

CNA’s are required to complete 12 Inservice hours every year, for a total of 24 hours every 2 years. Inservices include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Bloodborne pathogens, Infection control
  • Domestic violence
  • Medical record documentation and legal aspects appropriate to nursing assistants
  • Resident rights
  • Communication with cognitively impaired patients
  • CPR skills
  • Medical error prevention and safety

Whether you’re waiting until the last minute or you want to get started on your continuing education ahead of time, here is a list of some of the more inexpensive websites available for obtaining your education hours:
